I've mentioned this one before, but could I recommend Karl Popper's "A World
of Propensities" for another perspective on the problems of.....well,
perspectives, really. His take on the relationships between the individual,
the society and 'objective reality' is instructive and readable. He is
possibly one of the most innovative 'philosophers of science' this century,
and from a viewpoint that easily encompasses most previous thinking, from
Democritus onwards. His major contribution may be to have shown that the
concept of 'proof' is basically untenable (at least in any absolutist
sense). Thus, 'science' is not actually about 'hard facts' and 'laws' and
'proofs', but about the evolution of ideas, and the testing (to destruction)
of the best hypotheses one can muster. An important implication, which I may
have mentioned before, is that 'science' of itself, does NOT produce the
hypotheses it tests. ScienTISTS do, but that's another thing.
So there's no such thing as 'good music' (or even music) in the scientific
sense, nor probably is there a 'scientific definition' of "Quality". Nor
should there be. But the effort to develop better 'adequate operational
definitions' of such abstract concepts is synonymous with the effort to
develop a better understanding of the universe about us, which is identical
to saying 'extend our perception'. And of course, the job will never be
finished!
regards,
ppl
