Greetings,
STRUAN:
"Secondly, I didn't say the subject object division is a myth. I said
subject object METAPHYSICS is
a
myth. On many occasions I have explicitly accepted the subject object
dichotomy - but that dichotomy
is not a metaphysical position which anyone holds."
Let me elaborate. The subject/object dichotomy is a psychological phenomena.
It describes how a
conscious human being relates to his environment. It therefore takes as its
starting point the
existence of a human being. This is not metaphysics but psychological
analysis. Metaphysics concerns
itself with the existence and properties of the presupposed (in SO thinking)
human being and the
world which exists apart from human observation. (One glance at the fossil
record should be enough
to dissuade those who claim that nothing exist outside of human observation)
Hi Struan
A comment or two... I find it interesting that the fossil record is cited as
dissuasion against what is essentially a logical positivist position, for
like subject/object metaphysics, the fossil record does not really exist.
Interpretations of the fossil record exist, of course, but nowhere will you
find a dusty tome called "The Fossil Record". Conjectures and imagination is
all we have to go on, and this is so by the very virtue of finding ourselves
human. So we might conclude that like subject/object metaphysics, the fossil
record exists only as a figment of our human imaginations, but that isn't
strictly correct either. For certainly great beasts once wandered the earth
way before humans made an appearance, unless of course one subscribes to
creationist theory, and I am not entirely convinced that their argument
carries no validity.
So it would seem both SOM and the fossil record are psychological
phenomenon, but what isn't?
Cory
