From www.dictionary.com:
met·a·phys·ics
1. (used with a sing. verb)Philosophy. The branch of philosophy that
examines the nature of reality, including the relationship between mind and
matter, substance and attribute, fact and value.
2. (used with a pl. verb)The theoretical or first principles of a
particular discipline: the metaphysics of law.
3. (used with a sing. verb)A priori speculation upon questions that are
unanswerable to scientific observation, analysis, or experiment.
4. (used with a sing. verb)Excessively subtle or recondite reasoning.
It seems to me that both SOM and MoQ fit #1 pretty well, wouldn't you
say? They are both ways of looking at the relationship betweem mind and
matter, fact and value, as far as I can tell. SOM is the viewpoint that
there are two seperate facets of reality: the subjective, which is "all in
your head" and which is created in the minds of people, and the objective,
which is an external reality completely seperate and independent of human
existence. MoQ proposes that mind and matter or subject and object (not to
say that mind=subject, but it holds regardless) are related by something
called Quality, which "predates" subject and object, in a manner of
speaking. Now, it seems fine to me to disagree with either viewpoint, but
I don't see how you can deny the fact that both SOM and MoQ are
metaphysical viewpoints. Pirsig suggests that SOM is frequently a
subconscious metaphysical viewpoint, rather than one that people hold
consciously.

Matt
