SASU puts a finger on the contrasting approaches of Western and Eastern
philosophy.
The insignificance of self comes from the East.
The centrality of man, and of things that individuals can perceive is
the Western empirical tradition, of which Aristotle is a central pillar.

The mysticism of the East has great appeal, but creates great
difficulties with explaining common experience e.g. why your own
headache hurts so much more than someone else's.

In practical terms, Western thought has proved much more consequential.

If I understand Pirsig correctly, his aim is to point out that Man is
the Measure, at the centre of everything he perceives, but at the centre
ONLY of the things he perceives.
