Roger and Horse,
HORSE:
"Perhaps one of you very clever chaps that sees the universe as a very
rational, scientific
and logical place (with obviously no place for mysticism or other such hippy
shit) would be
good enough to give us poor gormless gumby Pirsigians the benefit of your
incredible
wisdom."
RICK:
I'm not sure who this directed at, but we here are all, in one way or
another, Pirsigians.....

RICK:
I'm not sure what this has to do with anything we've been discussing. I
don't think anybody in this discussion ever has disputed that the map is not
the road (so to speak). Nobody has asked for, or even mentioned anything
like "the absolute right or wrong metaphysics or scientific theory". All we
have ever been doing is looking, as you say, for "those of value" and I
can't recall anyone ever saying anything to the contrary.... In fact, all
this discussion has been is an INQUIRY into the VALUE of Pirsig's comments
in his recent letter. I believe (like Struan) that Pirsig asked one very
important question (What evidence do we have that Quality=Reality?) and
answered another rather innocuous question (What evidence do we have that
value is real?). The proposition that Quality=Reality is the underlying
principle of the MoQ and therefore the Value of the MoQ will depend on the
veracity of that proposition. We can hardly decide which maps have Value if
we don't examine them to see how closely they resemble the road. A map that
does not reflect the road is of (at best) questionable value; a metaphysics
that does not reflect reality is the same.
ROGER (On Quality=Reality):

> patterns which form living patterns etc.

RICK:
Yes, we all know what Pirsig says...but these are propositions and theories,
not evidence.
Great to hear from you Rog,
It's all Good anyway,
Rick
