Salutations, ALL!
At 35 years of age I am winding up my FIRST semester at College of the
Redwoods on CA's "Lost Coast". As a microdomain in the act of attempting to
transcend itself ("Paradox ?", what an enigmatic question!), I moved from
S/W MO to Arcata
in June of '99 and eventually overcame my aversion to the idea that I might
have something to learn from "a bunch of fusty academics" after all (No!
Really!?).
I find myself throwing away biases with both hands, and am ever humbled at
every turn (a Humboldt Co. phenomenon, I'm told.).
With my novice status in mind, I'll be sitting on my hands with a puzzled
elephant in my lap for a few weeks while I try to get a feel for what I
might contribute to this discussion without annoying YOU my more learned
counterparts
(learning to write shorter, less convoluted sentences, for example!).
(not to mention, fewer parenthetical interjections)
(say, there's an idea for discussion: the relative merits of true EVolution
as opposed to mere pedantic CONvolution...naw, you're already having that
discussion without MY pedantic prompting. I'll shut up!)
Anyway, after a mere hour of witnessing your MOQ_DISCUSSion, I simply could
not keep my one-man-standing-ovation confined to my little shoe-box. The
neighbors are beginning to worry.
This is fantastic, well, maybe I should get out of my little tidepool more
often, BUT THIS IS FANTASTIC!!!
THANKYOUTHANKYOUTHANKYOUTHANKYOUTHANKYOUTHANKYOU
My desk, clean only a few minutes ago, is now jammed with volumes of
Pirsig, Postrel, Rand, Douglas Adams (snicker), and others including my
ENTIRE Douglas
R. Hofstadter collection. Somebody, REEL ME IN!!!
I've come to realize just how dependant we are on the tools of Classical
Subject/Object Philosophy (which I have come to call "Metaphysics of
Dichotomy")
for highly focused communication of ideas, nevertheless, NO construct of
human inquiry can truly "contain" more than the tiniest portion of reality.
This leads me to an observation which I am preparing to present to my
Ethics class:
"Subject Versus Object; Hardware Versus Software; Mind Versus
Brain;
Determinism Versus Freewill; Logic Versus Emotion; Ethic Versus
Impulse; Right Versus Wrong; Death Versus Life;..."
(Static Versus Dynamic...MOQ Versus SOM...)
"What is the one Metaphysical Absurdity common to all of these
pairings?"
You guessed it!
I'll just watch and wait for awhile--at least 'till i can scrape together a
few milligrams of sobriety--but I just had to say it: BRAVO! JAM ON,
DUDES!!!
I'll go re-read "NETiquette, now!
With apologies and gratitude,
Dave March (a.k.a., "Riff Raff")
