Greetings,

RICK:
"I was wondering, is this to say that you don't believe ethics and science
can be integrated into a single system or merely that you believe Pirsig has
failed to do so?"

It is merely that I believe Pirsig has failed to do so, Rick.

Jonathan:

1) I was referring to arguments which end in insults, not ALL arguments.
This was not being hypocritical.

2) I read and appreciated your comments on the ethical framework of the moq.
In particular I agree entirely with this:

JONATHAN:
"To my way of thinking, it is ALWAYS more moral to take account of the
biggest picture possible. Rules and laws exist to save us the trouble, and
in most cases it is good practice to follow them . . . . . UNTIL one sees a
bigger picture that indicates otherwise."

So you will see that my initial lack of an answer was a result of my
agreement with you on the substantive point that you made. I therefore felt
it unnecessary for me to continue the argument and regret that you
interpreted this as me ignoring what you wrote. I did not. I accepted it as
a perfectly reasonable position and was grateful for it.

DAVID:
"Axioms are statements that are accepted without proof. Where were you
during
this part of ZMM? No logical system can be completely consistent! (Godel?)
If truth must be logically consistent, and no logical system is consistent,
then there can be no truth. Fuck truth!!!"

This simply isn't correct. Godel's theorem states that "for any consistent
formal system M containing a certain part of arithmetic, a sentence in the
language of M can be constructed which is neither provable nor refutable in
M". He did not state that 'no logical system can be completely consistent'
at all. He said that there is no consistent formal system in which every
mathematical truth is provable. Interestingly and very relevantly, one of
his other discoveries was that there IS a sound formal system in which every
first order logical truth is deducible.
