Hello. My name is Zachary Pierce, and this is my first post. I have been
lurking for a few days now. I am a 23 Year old former United States Marine.
I utilized my time over seas to study Buddhism and Zen Buddhism. A
voracious reader, I tackled ZMM while in the 9th grade. And again about 6
years later with a better understanding. I recently finished Lila about
three months ago.
In reply to HisSheedness. Perhaps the Code of Art, as the highest level,
serves to challenge the static patterns of the intellect, progressing
Dynamic Quality in that level.
Though art is born of the intellect, so to is the intellect born out of
individual members of a society, as a society is born out of individual
members of the biological level and so on. As biology defeats death by
giving life a series of static patterns to "latch" on to; society attempts to
restrain the biological behavior by giving individuals in a society static
patterns of value to latch onto; the intellect gives society its static
patterns, but what are we left with to spur on intellect? Art. A case could
be made also for the degenerate force art can also have upon the intellect.
Does the artistic movement spur static patterns which further the dynamic
quality? Or does it spur static patterns that cause the intellect to revert
to lower quality static patterns.
A case could also be made For Intellect providing itself with patterns to
latch onto. Science today is constantly providing us with new ways to view
the world in which we live in. Scientific law represents static patterns for
the mind to hold onto until a new theory, adequately tested, debunks the old.
Scientific theory does not concern itself with the emotive part of the
intellect. Perhaps this where a code of Art fits in the picture.
This is as yet a very undeveloped idea that I have here. I see holes in it
everywhere. Critique would be welcomed.

has anyone ever written to pirsig asking him for a defintion or an
elaboration upon the code of art? i know in the book he says it is not able
to be defined, but i think he could have made a better attempt to do so.
maybe (and most likely) im wrong, but i feel that the paragraph about it was
insufficient.
