Oddly, I'm seeing something similar on two other lists, one an engineering
list, and the other a very dry academic list. there's something about e-mail
communication which is quite different to spoken word, face to face
communication, or mail. It does seem easier to infer motives which may not
have belonged to the other, and so, when one falls out with someone via
e-mail, one is not really reacting to just what the other had said, but also
to one's own opinion of the other's motives. In effect, one is arguing with
a 'virtual protagonist'.
It's also something to do with humans' finite capacity for comprehension of
personal responsibility, and there's a parallel with methods of warfare; it
seems somehow easier to press a button that will wipe out a faceless enemy
than it is to wipe somone out face to face; broadband communication is
better for conveying consequences, then.
I have to say that, from this distance, the recent spats and resignations do
seem to add up to no more than a storm in a teacup, though I feel sure for
those more closely involved it feels quite different; but it does beg the
question: do administrative issues actually belong on the list? and
certainly by the number of unsubscribers, many of whom have been hitherto
just listeners, I would suggest that there should be another way??
Ah well, it was easier when we had Struan as the pantomime baddy!
cheers
