Andrea, Gerhard, Platt, Dan, Libertarians

about the "right to bear arms" once Dan Glover wrote:

*Here*, the simple thought that the right to bear arms is good so the citizens
will have eventually the power to overthrow the government is foolish. Those who
are used to have weapons here just want to protect themselves from criminals,
and probably would like to have an even stronger police.

These words, as well as many of Platt's words (and TV movies like X-files ),
finally showed me something I did not know in the beginning. Americans are
really afraid of (their) government. Something like to be on a constant personal
war against the nation. Even here we are often negative to our governors,
nevertheless we are not all the times on guard. In the end, probably in Europe
we are more confident with the system.

Quite the opposite seems to me the usual European attitude toward the
corporations. Everyone here is quite sure that private corporations just want to
swindle us.

Maybe we are both right?

Ad meliora

Although I am generally against military conscription, too. I think a reasonable
way is allowing an individual to reject to serve in the army and choose civil
service, but with some disadvantages, eg, longer service and obvious
consequences such as the

what was the case in Italy a few years ago, although I think that laws have
changed somehow recently (in favor of civil service, hence volunteer-based
army).
