Dear Clarke,

You asked Jonathan 12/6 12:08 -0400
"Do you feel safe when you walk your neighbourhood at night or lie down to sleep?" and you added
"- I personally don't, because of some individuals' propensity toward violent crime and robbery in my vicinity. That's probably another issue, but my little .22 calibre certainly gives me greater peace of mind."

Forgive me for not being able to suppress a heartfelt:
Yes, I do feel safe when doing so (living in Haarlem, the Netherlands, with 150.000 inhabitants). I felt less safe when I lived in Amsterdam (750.000 inhabitants) from 1976 until 1984. I never felt the least bit of fear however of being shot, because criminals and robbers have a lot of difficulty obtaining even a little .22 calibre and know that they don't need it to get what they want from me anyway, because I would have even more difficulty obtaining one.
After a slap in the face and a ruined bike in the Amsterdam entertainment district in 1981, I started taking lessons in Aikido, the most non-violent art of self-defence I know. That's more than enough for my peace of mind.

With friendly greetings,

Wim Nusselder
