RASHEED:
your post was comprehensive and overall pretty damn good, i just dont see why
you dont think humans are the highest form of evolution. I always assumed it
was a given that because we are the most complex beings and the only beings
possessed with the ability for DQ. The human brain is where all Quality is
comprehended. while beetles adapt to different environments by their own
processes of evolution, we also adapt by an evolving intellect.

ROG:
I didn't say we weren't the most complex or conscious (and deep down I
suspect we may be). On the other hand, it does seem to me that every species
evolves toward that which it values (another REAL controversial topic that I
better avoid for now). At least partially. Therefore it does seem logical
to expect each species to view itself as particularly "advantaged."

SIMON:
As regards my view of evolution, it has been put forward by others here.
Evolution vis a vis the levels is both a move away from the existing static
and a migration in the direction of (but not towards) DQ. (Using the word
towards to me suggests a destination, but DQ is always the forefront of
reality, the incomprehensible and unreachable by its very nature.) Over
time, existing static patterns become anachronistic and require replacement
(eg. our current situation with the antagonism between social and
intellectual patterns). Therefore, the creation of new patterns, eg
intellectual patterns to sit atop social patterns, is a move away from the
social patterns primarily, but the direction in which this move occurs is
given by DQ. Various moves away will have been tried over time, all in the
direction of (differing) DQ. One (or maybe more) has 'latched' at each of
these periods, eg biological over inorganic, social over biological....
Not totally coherent, but there you go,

ROG:
I thought you said it well!

PS -- Jonathan, I really want to re-engage you on the thermodynamic stuff
again, but I am not sure where to join in. As usual, you make real
interesting points on the issue. I think I disagree somewhere for a while,
but then I change my mind and it all seems clear.....hmmmmm
