Dear Native Son,
Yes, I have seen that movie, and what is so remarkable about it is that
everyone in the movie is constantly developing throughout the film, growing
in so many different directions. Yet the protagonist, who experiences a
satori through the medium of becoming infatuated with his daughter's friend,
experiences the most dramatic leap of faith. He realizes ultimately that his
image of the girl was only a representation of his desire to once again
connect with the beauty of life itself, free from static conventions. It
reminds me of Pirsig's recommendation to explore seemingly unrelated paths
on the journey as the questions that they present to the sojourner will lead
him or her into new understanding that would never have been found on the
most direct or logical route. Please tell me more of your impressions of
this fascinating flick.
