Pirsig is applying a hierarchic structure to Quality when he breaks it into DQ and SQ. He then relieves Quality of the hierarchy when he reminds us of 'the ultimate Quality'. He does this and is consistent with his belief that an infinite amount of hypotheses can be fathomed. His structure of hierarchy is designed for everything but does not contain everything! When he breaks Quality into two things to start the hierarchy, he fits the Dynamic and Static with the understanding of Quality and viola DQ and SQ. In short: If we are to take DQ or SQ without the Q, we lose Quality.
