MD The soul of the Giant:In troubled times, paths are made by walking

The indigenous people of Peru have a saying--"In time of shifting sands, one
makes a path into tomorrow by walking."

As the world looks in grief at the heap of rubble at World Trade Ground Zero, we
look beyond the dust and tangle to feel anguish for the 5,000 people trapped,
almost certainly dead. We think of them as parents who didn't get home, as
people who suffered great pain and anguish, as our loved ones.

In the days to come, just as the flashlights of the rescuers are having to focus
on each beam, each piece of rubble, each remaining piece's structural potential,
we will begin to see this tragedy in other ways, as well. What were the
contents of each file drawer, each computer, each office's daily schedule, each
person's expertise and knowledge?

The Giant--that invisible web of business and interpersonal relations that
guides the world--has just lost a major node of its brain and nervous system.
Like all living organisms, it must now compensate by using other parts of its
body to take up the slack, and then repair itself. As it repairs, it will
follow its memory of the old destroyed patterns. It will also make changes
based on new awareness. A new intellectual-level model will come into being, in
response to the dynamic events. Perhaps it will be an intellect of goodness and
excellence. Perhaps it will be warped by Jingoism or hate. Nevertheless, in the
coming weeks and months, the Quality event will be a constant companion, a
constant opportunity, because so many static blinders have been removed.

What many people may not realize is that the new intellectual patterns of the
Giant (the new trade and business and legal issues and stock market) can only be
repaired with the substance of social patterns that are present when the repair
is being made. Think about that: The new intellectual patterns can only be
repaired with the substance of social patterns that are present when the repair
is being made.

Today, we are aware of 5000 particular people as parents, grandparents and loved
ones. The Giant's awareness, usually so cold an business-like, has been
extended into areas of emotion and personal survival which it usually ignores.
The response of America is also going to be a response from the areas of
emotion and personal survival. And it may well have been a cry of the rest of
the world's social and personal-survival needs that catalyzed this event.

So the Giant has been struck in a major nerve by the biological and
personal-survival issues of the rest of the world, and has extended its
awareness to its own biological and personal-survival components, on which it
will depend, especially as it repairs itself. This extension of awareness, in
itself, is a very good thing. Certain aspects of business and intellectual
thought have been careening off on their own tangent for far too long.

As we experience the events around us, we are all wondering in frustration,
"What can I do?" "How can I help?"

This is what you can do: Live each moment as if it was your finest example of
your highest standard of living. Live according to your vision of the future,
of your ideal daily life. This is more important even than the work of rescuers,
government leaders, and military planners. The new patterns will be formed of
the substance of social patterns that are present when the repair is being made.

This is truly a time in which each person makes a difference. What each person
says is crucial. What each of us does in the world in which we live and move and
have our being is the most important event in the entire world. This is a time
to throw off past baggage and live to our dreams, because the pattern of our
moments--where we go, who we are with, what we buy, what we decide we don't
really need--is the stuff of the new world.

"In time of shifting sands, one makes a path into tomorrow by walking."
