I used to like RATM a lot back in 8th grade, but not anymore really. Even though they may have been sellouts or whatever, they still were the only socially conscious mainstream 90's group I've heard of. Other people write Britney Spears' lyrics, make up her dance moves, tell her how to look, how to act in public... she's not a real person. I don't know where that comparison to RATM comes in. While they may not have been fully educated on what they sang about, they still chose substantial material to sing about. Mumia Abu Jamal, censorship, etc. If you think about how many musicians were socially conscious in the 60s and 70s (Marvin Gaye, Bob Dylan, the Beatles), you'll see that there is a void to be filled today. Maybe RATM wasn't the ideal band to fill it, but they tried nonetheless and they get my respect for that.
