Hi John B:
Quite obviously we have reached an impasse precluding further
discussion between us, at least on the subject at hand. I take no
offense from your "bluntness" but am disappointed at your ad hominen
attack, comparing Roger and me to some wacko lady attempting to
convert others to her religion. Strongly held and expressed views do
not a fundamentalist make. I am glad you are not the host of this
discussion group. According to your rules, quite a few of us would have
been kicked out long ago.
Rather than disappointment, I am amused by your appeal to open
mindedness on one hand, and on the other hand viciously accuse
Pirsig of moral bankruptcy. Talk about a religious belief! But I'm not
surprised. Hypocrisy is often found on the left side of the political
spectrum. (Your belief in "global consciousness" without defining what
that means other than we should all hold hands, sing "Kumbaya" and
think like you and Ken Wilber puts you on the left. No offense, of
course. Some of my best friends are leftists.)
If Wilber is your hero, so be it. Pirsig is mine, and so are the millions of
Americans and Australians who put their lives on the line to defend
freedom against the Bin Ladens of the world. That's not "indoctrination"
as you suggest. That's historical fact. Now there is another threat from
the forces of unmitigated evil. The only question is whether the free
world has the stomach for a long fight against an enemy ready and
willing, like the Kamikazes of World War II, to commit suicide to gain
their barbaric ends that will send the course of civilization back a
thousand years.
