I also find that I like the idea of the "moral" choice
being the one that provides the more evolved patterns.
My main issue with Pirsig's approach is he seems very
much to preach that a pattern at a higher level is by
definition more evolved and therefore the moral choice
over one at a lower level.
I think the levels themselves are really a
intellectual construct to attempt to classify the
various evolutionary states of patterns and as such
are not that cut and dry. Like most constructs made
by humans they are not 100% spot on. So the assertion
that the moral choice is for the higher evolved choice
doesn't really solve a hell of a lot. We still need
to examine the options and accurately determine which
parts of which patterns are more evolved than others.
Also I think we are seldom faced with a choice which
is absolute. You don't have to completely discard
pattern x and replace it with pattern y. Often you
merely modify pattern x with the parts of pattern y
that you are currently prepared to take on board
(hopefully the more evolved parts).
I also hugely agree that as your static patterns
evolve your view of the dynamic changes. I think your
existing static patterns are the basis for your
interpretation of the dynamic world so there will be
parts of the dynamic reality that if experienced with
inadequate unevolved static patterns will be
misunderstood and potentially detrimental.
I have not read much Wilber but thanks to your post he
is definitely on my list of to read.
