Perhaps I did not make myself clear (I seem to keep doing that, dammit -
please feel free to offer advice on how to improve the Quality of my
harangues), here's the new-and-improved Cliff's Notes version:
- The State can be defined as the monopoly of physical force;
- Physical force and coercion, are Biological-Level Means, to an End;
- The State is (at best) a set of Biological-Level Means, to Social-Level
Ends;
- The State is not equivalent to, or a synonym for, the Social Level
(Society).
In other words, I actually agree with you. I hope this is not too disturbing
;-)
OK... and if I did mislead anyone by the careless use of "lesser of two
evils" etc., that's meant _relative_to_ higher forms of
Society/civilisation, and especially to the Intellectual Level.
I also carelessly used "The Giant" as a synonym for "The State". It was
my way of using that metaphor in that particular instance, because it fits
in with the Golem thing, and a book on the origins of the State by Hobbes -
"Leviathan". It is probably more confusing than worth it here, because
Pirsig uses it as a metaphor for the entire Social Level. My bad.
