Platt,
I understand that you disagree with the terrorists, and you think of them
as the scum of the earth. But we have to treat them as what they are, by
dismissing them as biological, no better than animals, you will not
understand them. If we do not understand them, we cannot defeat them. Like
the art of war says, Know your enemy and know yourself; in a hundred
battles, you will never be defeated.
In their demented view, they see themselves as heroes, acting for the
greater good of society. We must understand that and use it rather than
ignore it and treat them like animals. Animals fear death, they would not
fly themselves into skyscrapers, even if they could. Animals fear the
dominant animals and do not mess with them. These men are not animals.
Animals are content with eating, drinking and having sex. These men are of a
religion where seeing women on the street is illegal, and they think the
whole world should be the same. Animals have no God. These men are so sure
of God and their place in heaven when they die that they do not fear death
itself. These are not animal minds we are dealing with here, it would be
easier if it were. These are men with a social belief system so strong that
it rocks the very foundation of the intellectual level. Maybe your morals
are socially favored in nature and you cannot even think to compare your
views to theirs so dismiss them. Maybe you just don't see them as people at
all. Hopefully, though, the generals in charge of this battle do not
underestimate them as you do.

P.S. He said might-makes-right is biological, I agree. The terrorists
acknowledge the might of the superior American military and yet think the
Americans are wrong. Would that not prove that they, in fact, aren't
biological?

Hi Rob:

You wrote:

> Terrorism is social.

Pirsig wrote: (emphasis added)

" . . . rule by TERROR . . . the old BIOLOGICAL might-makes-right
morality of prehistoric brigandage that primitive societies were set up
to overcome." (Chap. 24)

Am I correct to conclude that you disagree with Pirsig's placing terror at
the biological level?
