Hi Wim,
Just one clarification that I've seen come up:
> There
> should be more to it than "keeping our hearts and
> minds open to
> DQ", taking it out of the realm of "discussion of
> principles of a
> metaphysics", as DQ is indefinable according to
> Pirsig.
Pirsig NEVER says DQ is indefinable. At one point he
says it is "indescribable." But it is definable. What
is DQ to Pirsig? It is the book LILA. DQ is a form of
life, like you said, story telling. Here are the
definitions:
133 DQ is preintellectual cutting edge...
137 DQ is Whitehead's "dim apprehension"...
138 DQ is manito
139 DQ is quality of freedom
164 DQ is value that cannot be contained by static
patterns
165 DQ is source of all things, pre-intellectual
cutting edge
389 DQ is undefined auspiciousness [which is a
definition of DQ]
As for Quality:
73, 159 Quality is undefinable...
As for there being more to the MOQ, there is a limit
to metaphysics as I have said and I think it is the
position of Pirsig. We live in a parallel reality so
there are 2 kingdoms: show and say. A story, as you
noted, is the "show" and an MOQ is a "say." I think
people think the MOQ is MORE than what it is: half of
the kingdom. The kingdom of the "show" is the other
half, but there is "nothing" to "say." But it's still
half and the notion of adding a "fifth" element is
misquided. The sentiment is right, but there is
nothing to "say."
So it really is "keep our hearts open to the DQ." We
need the MOQ to "help" us get out of the "say". But
"HOW" we do it is irrelevant. If MOQ doesn't help, try
a different map. But remember it is only half of the
story...
