I posted your very same letter from the Dalai Lama on this list a few months
ago. I respect Bush's decision not to immediately bomb any country without a
period in which to investigate what happened. I still, however, think more
care could be taken in the bombing campaign so as not to hit villages.

In response to your question:

How can you have a really stable sense of self and still be dynamic? Does a
mystic have both?

It's my view that there is an ultimate static Quality which is not
realistically attainable. Joseph Campbell describes the two states of man as
Being and Becoming. He places Being above Becoming, but says that one must
be careful not to enter the Being stage until she is done Becoming. Perhaps
there is a point where one reaches the limits of where DQ can take her, and
reaching this point is what qualifies one as a mystic.
