Struan,

Though I believe you to be an intelligent and honest man, I believe that
despite all your criticisms of Pirsig, you have missed the point entirely.

I agree with you, in so far as saying that Pirsig's ideas aren't anything
new, but this is not to discredit the *significance* of his work.

Indeed, Pirsig himself joins you in saying that Quality= Reality is not a
new idea. He then takes it to extremes in saying that it is the oldest idea
known to man.

The reason, at least for me, that, despite your criticisms, I feel no pain
in hearing you discharge, is because, for me, Pirsig's work is not a thing
to be shrouded in (by).
I fear that many here may instead be working solely within the confines of
Pirsig's shadow. And therefore, feel great discomfort when you begin
attacking their cultural immune system.

The work of words my friends, is not to grasp the truth, but only to
transport it.

So Struan, do as you may with the work of Pirsig, for the new center of
spiritual excitement begun in me by his words is unshakable.
Not for the reason of great attachment to his work, but by the disattached
energy his work has transported to my very being am I made agile.
