Dear Rog,

While I can appreciate your opinion, it seems that to measure the impact of
intent on our perception of results is to presuppose that we, individually,
really know, in the short term, which results are good. If one is in a
situation to sacrifice his life to save five innocent people, and he does so
with the result of saving those five people, even though he may not be
consciously aware of it (being deceased), we all would say his act was of
Courage (and Quality). If he should do the same thing and fail, then most
would say that he acted foolishly and lacking Quality. perhaps his actions
would be called rash. However, this presupposes two things that we mortals
are incapable of knowing individually. (1) whether his act was one of
compassion, or of masochism, or perhaps driven by anger and revenge? In the
model that I suggest, each of these may have different results from biases
that can be perceived only by those involved in the act (most of whom would
be deceased if it failed) and (2) whether results that seem immediately of
poor value are not later seen as the catalyst for effective change. I would
argue that the only thing on which we can rely in life is intent. But lest
we trivialize the concept of compassionate intent, may I reiterate that,
IMO, true compassion requires wisdom, tolerance and great patience. It is
not to be confused with impetuosity.

The Bard
