THE Q:
What do the patterns of higher quality have that those of destruction, decay
and disorder don't?

JOHN:
In your original post where the question was raised you said "I agree that
we can't know for sure which changes are improvements until new ideas are
tried, however, I do suspect that there are patterns to success (In other
words, we can't be sure where DQ is, but we can be pretty sure where it is
very unlikely to be found. The solution isn't entirely random imo."

Because if excellence can be taught, and Pirsig does not seem to debate this,
then it means that we are able to navigate towards quality...

ROG:
I will be brief. I feel a strong affinity toward the passion/compassion
angle from the Bard. "The catalyst for creation (Dynamic Quality) is
passion; and the catalyst for creative responsibility (necessary to sustain a
viable Static Quality) is compassion."

I tend to prefer the terms creativity and harmony, but what they make up for
in clarity they lose in poetry. But to navigate toward Dynamic Quality, the
best answer is to establish an environment of harmony and creativity. By
harmony, I mean establishing as large of a pattern as possible of mutual
support -- where you add value to your environment as it adds value to you.
It therefore becomes self flourishing. By creativity, I mean establishing a
process of continuously searching for novel ways to be more harmonious with
an even larger network.

Harmony and creativity -- aka compassion and passion -- is the path to
quality.
