Everything we call substance is nothing without experience. The only way we
can describe substance is by describing how we experience it. Yes, cultural
viewpoints will affect experience BUT like Pirsig was able to perceive the
dog through an Indian cultural viewpoint I think an Indian could percieve the
dog through a Greek cultural viewpoint. These cultural viewpoints may be
exclusive and an individual in that culture may be prone to one way but that
doesn't mean an individual in one culture can only experience one type.
Pirsig was able to see both right?
the reality of substance was missing from the Indian cultural viewpoint
--------
--- good doesn't have to be a substance, thus Pirsig did makes his point that
substance was not absolute reality.

So whether John Wooden leg knew that dog was a cocker spaniel or not the fact
that he interpreted the question as a question of value rather than as of
substance is probably influenced by his cultural viewpoint. Laverne and Pirsig
thought the answer strange because they were coming from another cultural
viewpoint, one that thinks of substance as absolute reality. Pirsig
eventually saw through this fallacy, and I feel justifiably so.
