Hi Roger and all,
I feel a bit cheeky coming in with a comment only as Roger is trying to
tie things up, but you will note that I was the one who started off this
particular thread, and I have enjoyed the ensuing discussions enormously. It
is pretty clear that the discussion has been ueful to many people, and
valuable to the group as a whole.
Roger's summary is all good, but if we want to distill it down still
further, I will pick out a single word that BARD introduced - that word is
TOLERANCE.
The most valuable patterns are the ones that are tolerant of errors and
unexpected situations. This applies to cooking recipes, computer programs,
motorcycle maintenance procedures - in fact everything (even a metaphysics).
Thanks to everyone who contributed and Roger for taking on a the role of
discussion leader.
Jonathan
