Hi Platt, Robert,

I think what I am trying to get at by bringing marriage in to this
discussion is that (to my mind) there is something necessarily individual
involved. That is, the biological and social aspects within a relationship
are replaceable - there are other biological or social units that could
carry out the functions equally well - but the individual is not
replaceable. To say to a bereaved widow "try John Doe here, he is just as
fertile and just as socially successful" would be to miss the point, I
think. And it seems to me that there is no room in the MoQ, as presently
(strictly) defined, to include that. I think that is a significant omission.

Of course the intellectual level need not be so strictly defined, and that,
as you rightly point out, deserves some study itself. I'd be happy to be a
monitor of something on that, but I'm going away for a week's leave next
week. When I come back, I'd be happy to kick start something off (and Robert
needn't worry, I'm not in the business of defining love).
