Hi Mike,
Glad to see someone else appreciating Wilber. Your comments on the
differences between Pirsig and Wilber seem to me to be sound. I've just
spent months writing an essay on how they combine, or don't, and am still
struggling to pin down the bits of Pirsig that do make sense, and to
critique Wilber, who, despite disclaiming any interest in metaphysics, of
course does stray into contentious areas. My real interest at present is the
intersubjective realm, which Wilber honours, and Pirsig either ignores, or
denies, or mocks, in his metaphysics, while unavoidably having to deal with
it, both in life and in his novels. I see the loss of community as an
implied sub text in 'Lila', as the loneliness theme comes up so often, and
Pirsig deals with it so poorly. It was much better handled in ZMM, and I
notice your reference to that book as well.
My only disagreement is your comment that Pirsig offers "a brilliant
exposition on the self from an auto-ethnographic or phenomenological
perspective". I find Pirsig quite confused on the self, at least when he
looks at it formally as part of his metaphysics. You are probably right,
though, as seeing his whole project falling into this realm.
Regards,
John B
