Hi Platt,

>since science is SOM, I don't follow how you arrive at the conclusion that
SOM is to
blame for absolute truths.

But science does proclaim many absolute truths. After Newton, for example,
many scientists proclaimed that physics was all wrapped up. There was
nothing more to be discovered. Oops. Slow, steady evolution was taken by
many as absolute fact. Only now are we discovering that evolution may have
occured in swift leaps. Had we not accepted these ideas as absolute truth
scientific advancement would have been faster. I still think finding and
nailing down 'absolute truth' is THE primary goal of SOM. It's what we all
want. It makes us feel very secure in our world.

>Nor do I agree that absolute truths, such as the date of your birth, are
always bad.

OK, I recant (sort of). Absolute truths are useful. They seem to me to be
more in the nature of universal agreements of experience than anything else.
The sun rose yesterday. Absolute truth.

>Do you consider Quality or excellence as ultimate reality an absolute? It
appears that you (and Pirsig) do.

Yes, until something better comes along... :)

Wishing you happiness,
Mary
