I think Pirsig is right ZMM is the popular one and Lila is the smart
one. That's why so many people don't like Lila because those particular
readers aren't getting the message that Pirsig was putting forth. I'm
not saying I'm a genius or anything because I too liked ZMM better. But
I think there is some higher level thinking in Lila. As to the
North/South theme, I think this has to do with the morals of the North
as opposed to the South and the Victorian virtues which Lila was
rebelling against. I could be wrong. Only Pirsig himself knows what
he wanted to say. And yes Erin I agree with that you are right; Lila is
a more complete story even though ZMM was a better story.

North/south? I'm not sure I follow you...

There could be alot of reasons why.... Perhaps LILA simply didn't get
the
recognition he had hoped for, so like a parent comforting his child he
tells
his daughter (LILA) don't worry, your brother (ZMM) may be more popular,
but
you're the smart one. Who knows...

You pegged me, I think ZMM is the superior work. As you know, I'm
unconvinced that that 'moral compass' of LILA has any real value for
moral
philosophy (for reasons explored in the MOQ as a moral guide thread as
well
as other reasons).

Again, I'm fuzzy on this north/south thing...
