ANGUS: BUT I never thought of Henry James in that way but you're right I
think. I have not seen Wings of the Dove, but Washington Square
and Portrait of a Lady I've read. He is dark ain't he?
I guess that's the point: we are automatic creatures
for a large extent and "unenlightened" people will
seek it and find it empty. Graham Greene is a little
more hopeful than Henry James in that regard. With
Pirsig being akin to William James, Henry James is
pertinent I think. I'll have to think about it. Thanks
for that.

ERIN: I had actually thought about Pirsig and the James family too. When I
was in college I heard a talk from a lady that studied the James family.
Hearing about the father, Henry, William, and their sister (Amy?), and then
hearing about Sidis from Pirsig I would have to say that is the most
interesting family ever--imagine hanging out at the Williams. He does seem
more like William to me too but I see aspects of Henry- he does work in
literature. As for darkness I felt a moment of it when I was reading that part
in LILA where he was "talking" with the doll.

ANGUS: Ultimately what gives humans dignity is a choice. Like
Gatsby. Even though he was obsessive in an animal way
in his love, he made a choice to "be" that obsessive
animal. He gave his life to protect what was an
"accidental" love.

ERIN: I was reading this book that referred to the imprinting process in a
atypical context. Do you think that this obsessive love is like an adult
imprinting process? Also I interpreted the talk with a doll as kind of
similar theme as the ending of End of An Affair when he was typing did you?
