Hi Bo, Andrea:
Regarding your debate about whether SOM's "Spirit" is the same as
MOQ's "Dynamic Quality," I wonder how you interpret the following
exchange reported by Jason Nelson in a post to the MD on 26 April,
1999:
JASON:
The following comments where made by Pirsig in the letter in
response to my question of, "If certain religious questions could be
proven true would those religious elements be at a higher level than
quality itself."
"Dear Jason Nelson,
Thank you for your good letter. To answer your question, those aspects
of religion which could be considered "dynamic right dharma" are at a
higher level than intellectual truths, including the truths of the
Metaphysical of Quality itself. The trouble is that religion always also
means a set of static intellectual truths and a static social organization
containing a lot of static biological people who own a lot of static
inorganic property. These static patterns are so strong that the dynamic
right dharma is all but lost."
As a reminder, Pirsig describes dharma in Chap. 30: "Dharma is
Quality itself, the principle of "rightness" which gives structure and
purpose to the evolution of all life and to the evolving understanding of
the universe which life has created." This comes close to "Holy Spirit"
as I understand the word to mean in the Christian religion.
Do this help clarify the debate or confuse matters more?
