Erin, Platt, Wilber, Pirsig, etc.,
Really, the question for Platt in regards to
post-modernism and for Wilber is the issue of [dq]
depth [/dq]. Wilber and Platt describe postmodernism
as this surface fragmentation of reality. Certainly,
the surface manipulation at a shallow depth is used in
poor ways by lots of elite thinkers (Clinton, Enron,
any corporation, etc.). It is true there is a theme of
surface manipulation that gives postmodernism a bad
name. I think Platt and Wilber are correct in warning
about this approach. Wilber and Platt want a better
way, a [dq] deeper [/dq] way. I think we all agree on
this problem.
What is the solution? Wilber uses spiral dynamics
which I think is a form of colorism, [dq] rainbowism
[/dq] and I'm not sure on Platt's views. I think
Pirsig is basically right and it sits WITHIN his
Metaphysics: a tension between the wild and the
ordered. Using Kundera's, it would be the tension
between the heavy and the light. It's this tension
that gives postmodernism [dq]depth[/dq]. I've loved
Derrida's deconstruction from the beginning because of
this insight but most people join the "warning"
bandwagon of Platt and Wilber.
So maybe Platt agrees with us all, he's just still
barking about the problem when we have moved on to the
solution. And maybe he has too????

PS:
Erin, I agree with your parallel of paraconsistent
logic and light/heavy. That helps me actually. I'm
working on a modern philosophy through modern movies
approach. Just tell a kid to watch "Unbearable
Lightness of Being" and he'll understand
paraconsistent logic is exactly what the "show" realm
is about.
