Right, solid part, not hole.

But your "o's" make it much easier to understand : (computerific too)
And to carry it a step further: o = a transparent opening, the b,r,g,y
= (old x's) = a particular level colored value indicating an event.

Depending on your PoV in this revised model (ie looking this way >>, or
|, or / determines which way you are observing the particular pattern of
values) the resultant colors and intensity (white = equal values on each
level) would be different and is dependent not only on the observer's
PoV but the underlying patterns . The key would be the correlation of
these multiple PoV observations to the underlying reality. Predictably
pure chaos. But given enough time and peyote we might and do figure it out.

Haven't really though about the implications of multi washers per level
model.
And not familar with the neural net model, but there a surely many other
similar analogies to this around. Like has been said many times by
Pirsig's detractors, "there's nothing new here," but in this case it's
most probably true.
