Hey Erin,

RICK
No. Where do you get that from?
ERIN
....Or I could stare at the lightbulb like Pirsig says and get the
dharmakaya afterglow.
RICK
Pirsig says the Dharmakaya light is "...SOMEWHAT LIKE the light that
comes when one stares at something too long [emphasis added]". He does not
say it THE SAME. This is evidence for an interpretation that distinguishes
between kinds of inorganic light on the basis of their source.
Basically, I think Pirsig is discussing the effect of biological (pupil
dilation) and social (objectivity) filtering on the perception of an
inorganic phenomenon (light). Biological filters (like pupil dilation)
determine how much of the inorganic light spectrum we perceive. D-light is
outside of the normal range of perception and so is unperceived by most.
Social filters (like objectivity) determine whether we recognize the light
that we've biologically perceived. DQ is unrecognized by those who classify
everything in a subjective/objective dichotomy and so even if they perceive
the light they dismiss it because they don't know its significance (a thing
that has no value doesn't exist). Therefore, the D-light is only perceived
by a small segment of the population, and recognized by even less
(especially in western cultures).
it's just a thought
