Sorry, Wim, I did not want to close the thread. I've just offered my
conclusion, that, according to the philosophy of this forum is necessarily
temporary. And necessarily personal. As 3WDave reminds, we are working on a
motorcycle called "myself".
Good post, Wim, thanks for sharing your thoughts. "Better reflecting before
acting" is indeed a good sentence, yet I think the 4th level can't be
exhausted with it. Firstly, the Eastern rituals (like the famous art of
Archery that inspired Pirsig) are all about acting without reflecting.
Then, let me try a parallelism with the social level. Democracy is indeed
about hearing the voices of the citizens, but not always. That's why there
are -elected- leaders. A good leader should have the courage to be sometimes
unpopular, take decisions and eventually pay for the consequences after a
certain number of years. A real time perfect democracy could not work
effectively. Few weeks ago there has been a brief discussion just about how
to build a monument. A democratic monument IMO would be a disaster. And even
worst results a perfect democracy would get in terms of effectiveness and
rapidness.
Reflecting is about connecting our intellectual patterns: memories,
intentions, experience.... and decide "after" having heard these inner
voices. Well, sometimes it is good, sometimes not. The risk is a complete
lack of creativity and of quick decisions. Artistic inspiration can't be in
great agreement with your "better reflecting before acting". Artists act....
and then critics will reflect.
Ciao,
Marco
p.s.
Of course I agree that agreement is a valid option :-), but my first
intellectual option is a progress toward a better "myself". That means I
just would like my intellect evolve to a better explanation of the world and
a higher creativity. To a better static latch made of answers, while keeping
the necessary curiosity for new questions. Agreement, in this context, is
good as social test of my intellectual "system of thought". I realize of
course that this point explains my ... fixation, if you want, on
individuality as intellectual "principle".
