Hey Glenn and all,

GLENN
Yeah, it bothered me that the compositional theme didn't follow through.
Intellectuals weren't composed of societies.

RICK
This bothered me for long time as well. Lately, I've been tinkering
with the theory that Pirsig's intellectual level is basically an adaptation
of the pragmatistic notion of a marketplace in ideas. This may help clear
up the "problem" you point to in the sense that while ideas or intellectuals
don't seem to be composed of social patterns, the marketplace is.
Competition among ideas to get accepted in an intellectual marketplace
composed of social patterns is what drives intellectual evolution. Of
course, this holds only as long as the Intellectual level is seen as the
marketplace itself rather than as any singular idea (sorry SOLAQI) or set of
ideas.
