Hey all,
So many opinions....
DARRYL
I do indeed speak brashly, but what is going on in the West Bank is simple
and straightforward. Israel is using its military might, supplied by the
United States, to kill people. This is a simple fact.
RICK
I find it amusing that you characterize the Arab/Israeli conflict as
"simple and straightforward." The roots of the conflict run so deep and are
so tangled that decades of attention from some of the finest minds from all
over the world have failed to even make a dent. And it's even worse than
that. This thing really goes back to the days of Isaac and Ishmael. It's a
blood feud that has carried on for millennia that has left no corner of the
globe unscathed. There are no "simple" facts here and no amount of
oversimplification will solve it.
GAV
i say this with heartfelt anguish and sincerity:
WAKE UP!
RICK
How profound and helpful of you.
HARRY
To Israel and to Palestine - if you think it's justified, kill each other,
but please don't try to draw other people in your endless, "he said, she
said" revengeful, and mutually self-righteous mischief. We have enough
problems without yours.
RICK
If only it were that easy. If 9/11 proved anything it that this conflict is
a dangerous social pattern that has grown strong enough to threaten us all,
in any nation. Ignorance is bliss, but we can't close our eyes anymore.
ROB
This Us vs. Them type of thinking IS the problem and will never lead to a
solution. Some may be dismayed that George Bush reluctantly has changed his
message but athough the people of Israel can't seem to see it, it is in fact
in their best interests...The only thing holding people back is the hope
that it is not necessary, once it becomes evident that peace is impossible,
I can't imagine the death toll. It's not worth it.
RICK
I concur.
MIGUEL
There can be no hysterical sympathy for the deaths of gunmen who send out
children to kill.
RICK
Certainly not. The sympathy is for the innocents that have died and will
die because our ideas and our leaders have again and again failed to settle
this conflict. The sympathy is for the living. For the next twisted child
that will be convinced it's glorious to strap a bomb to your back and attack
a bus station; and the innocent Israelis (both Jews and Arabs as Jonathan
reminds us) who's lives that child will end.
SQUONK
What the Jews are doing to Palestinians is, in effect, what they would wish
to do to any non-Jewish peoples if they could?
RICK
What the Jews are doing to the Palestinians is, in effect, what they would
wish to do to any peoples that breed, sponsor, and harbor terrorist forces
bent on the destruction of Israel and Judaism. But what nation or people
wouldn't try and defend themselves against such a threat? (I noticed that
you put a question mark at the end of your sentence despite the fact that it
is clearly a statement and not a question. do you really believe what you
write?).
PLATT
If you refer to the MOQ as a moral authority that's fine with me because I
do the same.
RICK
Cheers to Platt for being the only person to try and keep the MOQ in this
thing. Personally, I believe that the MOQ would agree with you that if only
one can survive it should be Israel (because of their greater accommodation
for intellectual freedom). However, I would add that the highest Quality
solution would surely be one that envisioned two nations ---Israel and
Palestine, peacefully coexisting so that both can evolve to embrace
Intellect.
keeping my fingers crossed in NY,
rick
