David,

>Traditionally taxes might be higher in socialist nations, but that doesn't
>translate into a greater use of force. I mean, its not like you need a
>bigger gun to collect higher taxes.

Well you do not need a bigger gun but you might need more of them. 'Gun'
here is just a metaphor for state force.

>And tax laws and tax resisters don't really get at the distinction between
>capitalism and socialism.

True, certainly not all the distinctions. There is no question that the
social patterns are more moral than biological patterns and that social
patterns need to defend themselves against social patterns but at the
intellectual level isn't there a value of consent? To finance a social
pattern on a violation of an intellectual level value is fine if all your
worried about is your social pattern surviving just don't call it more moral
than a system which is really based on the consent of the governed.

>Tax laws and tax resisters both go back into ancient world.

Yes and for good reason. A social pattern needs stability and financing but
when that stability cannot be changed, when there is no way to opt out, I
think it becomes degenerative. In biology a single crop (monocrop?) is in
much more danger from biological forces (diease) so too a society consisting
of only one pattern is much more prone to degeneration.

>It seems the most important thing about taxes is spending it wisely. High
>taxes are fine if you get excellent services in return, just like you don't

>what you pay for. Ca Ching.

What an amazingly elitest thing to say. I am constantly struck how unjust
it seems to ethnic Palestinian US citizens support via their taxes Israeli
arms deals.
