John,

Perhaps we are not too far apart. To quote you:
> Perhaps it is possible to have both, but I am

If you think of the STORY of Lila as the IMMEDIACY of
Pirsig the author, as Pirsig's DQ, then you can see
"it is possible to have both [language and
experience]" via a STORY and a METAPHYSICS, where the
metaphysics is the thinking and language that is so
static in opposition to the experience of the story.
Thus, Lila viewed as integrated MOQ and Story answers
your call. We need to all write our OWN stories while
maintaining a sense of the MOQ to avoid a solipsistic
pratfall. What are your thoughts? That's my pithy
position.

I don't think you should dismiss the story because
it's quality is not good. It's quality is not good
because Pirsig is not a good story teller. BUT it's
his Story, for better or for worse which makes the
poor story even more compelling. Why? We know it's
Pirsig's because the story is poor. But in being a
poor story we know it is his story and that is the
point isn't it? The story is Pirsig in the immediacy
of experience, it is the DQ of Pirsig. And in the
reading of a story we can experience a bit of our own
DQ by our own interpretations (I ask for you to
refrain from postmodern attacks on this sentence).
Thus, the fusion of story and metaphysics is a sort of
rediscovery of myths of old like "The Iliad" and such
but with a more rational element to appeal to a more
rational world. Thus, Pirsig does not make Wilber's
fabled "pre/trans" mistake.

With LILA the STORY and METAPHYSICS of course. A new
form of myth.

Angus
