MD forum,
Yesterday Struan claimed that Horse fabricated the circumstances
surrounding Struan's "un-subscription", which allegedly happened
sometime after December. This claim makes sense to me after a
reading of the posts, and I find myself in agreement with Struan when he
says that "This is typical of Horse's persistent reinvention of truth and
cowardly approach to dealing with dissent."
On Dec. 7, Struan says he's going to Malta and will report back with the
next installment in a few months, to which Horse responds:
>Hurry back sweetheart - we're all waiting in trembling trepidation for
>the next installment of the "Struan making a complete idiot of himself
>(again!!) show"...We'll be waiting Struan.
It doesn't seem like Horse has any intention of locking Struan out here. It
drips with sarcasm, but Horse does not seem at all bothered by Struan's
eventual return because Struan will make "a complete idiot of himself"
when he does. He seems to relish his return, in fact. I haven't a clue
what precipitated Horse's decision to lock Struan out because nothing adds
up. Nowhere in the Dec postings do I see Horse warning Struan, one last
time, to behave lest he be outcast. And how could he warn him in good
conscience, when his own behavior is worse.
Upon re-reading the December posts, we find that Struan strikes his usual
"I don't suffer fools lightly" demeanor in his posting to Platt, but it is
Horse who jumps into the conversation and *baits* Struan. Subsequent
postings clearly show Horse being *more* abusive than Struan. Horse breaks
rule 8, repeatedly.
I think it's time for Horse to step down from his position as moderator.
Horse does not adequately represent the values of the group, at least of
the members who bothered to give their opinions on this matter (except
Platt). Horse has never been truly interested in any critical analysis of
Pirsig's writings, has a weak tolerance for dissenting views, and basically
wants moq.org to be a sanctuary for people oppressed by the larger SOM
dominated world, or more properly the world he perceives as such. Horse is
saying that if you don't like it his way you can go elsewhere and start
your own group.
I might remind everyone that being a cult was never the original charter
of moq.org. Diana's intent was very basic; it was simply to understand
what the MOQ said. Given that you could do that, she was then interested
in exploring its metaphysical and sociological implications, good and bad,
and she did this until the day she left (in disgust). Under Diana's helm,
dissenting opinions were OK and people of my "ilk", as MOQers like to say,
could feel reasonably comfortable here. Until recently, I thought Horse
was fair and liberal, and I thought Struan's difficulty in re-subscribing
was just a technical snafu or because Horse was away from his computer for
a few days. But I was wrong about that and wrong about Horse, too.
