hey Erin,
> ERIN: Any other suggestions on how to communicate in "reality".
Elliot:
there is no way to communicate in "reality". communication takes place in
words and intellectual symbols, as does understanding in general. As i
understand it you say what is unique is the world before distinctions, but
unique is itself a distinction. there is no way to talk about the world
before distinctions because talk is distinction. But i don't think you've
ever given me an example of what you consider to be truly unique.
>ELLIOT: My defintion of uniqueness is "different
in every aspect". Yours has something to do with singularity. I like mine
(m)ore, sorry.
>ERIN: Erin is unique. Elliot is not unique. I like mine more, sorry.
Elliot:
What i meant was that i think my definition was more correct because it
takes into account that no object exsists in total isolation. We only know
things in there relation to other things. By your definition everything is
unique, and if everything is unique why even make the word? By my
definition we have a scale of unique-titude (uniqueosity?). it isnt
perfect because where ever someone choses to draw the line that such and
such ammount of distinction is considered unique is personal and arbitrary.
Luckily, everyone pretty much agrees on it because of social conventions.
..There's no buisness like show buisness.
..Wilbro shot the asgasi lout five.
By your definiton both of these sentances are unique. by mine, the one
that varies widely from common english is a much better candidate to be
considered unique. Your statement doesnt rely on any definition of
uniqueness that i can see, just on the assumption that its true because you
say so (obviously because that what you think i did, i hope you see now
that i only thought my statement was clear enough).
>A wonderful realization will be the day you realize that you are unique in
all
the world. There is nothing that is an accident. You are a special
combination
for a purpose-and don't let them tell you otherwise, even if they tell you
that purpose is an illusion. (Live an illusion if you have to). You are
that
combination so that you can do what is essential for you to do. Don't ever
believe that you have nothing to contribute. The world is an incredible
unfulfilled tapestry. And only you can fulfill that tiny space that is
yours.
~ Leo Buscaglia ~
Your quote is a real feel gooder, although i dont think i trust his
definition of unique. The case with feel good quotes is that their truth
is based in how good they make you feel. I have very similar organs to
others, my thoughts are constrained to the same dictionary as a large
number of people. I do many of the same things and feel many of the same
emotions. I am not so unique as i am easily identifiable as human, if not
young white male also. I dont need to feel like some unique superstar to
enjoy my life and live it as well as possible, and i dont need to be talked
out of believing i am worthless. And i'll let quality be my guide, not
some outside mandated "purpose". But whatever floats your boat.
