Elliot:
So what do you mean by objective reality? only quality?

Also, you said this in describing the conditions of the quality event: "The
scene that Pirsig
is describing consists of a person observing a tree. So, first off there
exists matter! A human being stands on planet Earth and a tree grows out of
the soil of planet Earth." then the quality event happens according to you.

I understand your point but its difficult to say that a person exsists and
a tree exsists before the quality event because these things are recognized
named and therefore brought into exsistance only after the quality event.
It is useless to talk about there exsistance prior to the exsistance of
concepts, words, illusions and distinctions. I think this might come from
your ideas of the intellect as hardwired into the brain, therefore the
exsistance of intellect requires a brain before it. This is all very
nitpicky, i know. But the MoQ is a map of human experience, and to
postulate things beyond and before perception (such as trees and brains) is
applying words to an understanding before words. I believe pirsig was
careful not to give names to things (well, except quality) untill the
intellect had given the name itself.

Good essay though,
Elliot
