Dear John B.,
You are expressing 13/5 22:05 +1000 again that you experience a dilemma in
the distinctio between mysticism and social activism (campaigning for
freedom, justice etc., which are by the way intellectual and not social
values according to me).
I replied 28/4 17:02 +0200 to your comparable ideas of 25/4 4:26 +1000 with:
'I don't see why liberation within and acting morally in the world can't
proceed simultaneously.'
As a Quaker I feel no dilemma at all... The effort should merely be to be
open to divine guidance or DQ or whatever transcends individual ego (as long
as it doesn't substitute it with collective selfishness). The Quaker story
(and even a lot of Quaker history as seen by non-Quakers) 'proves' that you
can trust to act morally if you act in accordance with your experience while
you are thus 'open'. What you write about seeking 'immediacy' etc. fits
comfortably with Quaker 'efforts' to follow divine guidance.
With friendly greetings,
Wim
