It's been a long while since I've posted, but I thought you might be
interested:

While an interesting coincidence, there is a substantive connection between
Rorty and Pirsig. They were both taught by Richard McKeon at the
University of Chicago, McKeon being Pirsig's archvillian "the Chairman"
from ZMM.
As far as I can tell, they never sat in the same classroom (Rorty recieved
his BA in '49 and MA in '52 and Pirsig was at the U. Of C. in '60), but
they were certainly both influenced by McKeon, so the connection, if not in
space and time, is at least in philosophical influence.
But wouldn't that have been funny if they had been in the same class around
the huge wooden table with the enormous crack down the center. And who
knows, maybe they didn't move classes around much and Rorty had been there
10 years earlier ;-)
