Hi Roger, (Platt, Wim, Lawrence .. . Marco) and all,

Roger, your answer to Wim overlaps to a large extent with my own (5th May
2002).
I may have made a mistake of posting something too long (11 KB), because
the very MoQish point I raised
about SELF DETERMINATION (near the end of my post) has been largely
ignored.

IMHO there is a link between the political concept of SELF DETERMINATION and
the philosophical concept of (SELF) AWARENESS that we discussed some months
ago (that's why I include Marco as an addressee). Palestinian self
determination is something inevitable. Even right-winger Ariel Sharon now
publically accepts the idea of a Palestinian state! I think that even the
opponents will eventually realise that resistance is futile.
I believe that peace will come when Palestinian the and Israeli national
wills are brought into alignment (the win-win situation).

Jonathan

ROGER's P.S.
<<PS -- I would also suggest starting with only giving Palestinians a large
part of the West Bank, and make the additional lands contingent piecemeal
upon sustained peace and restraint of terrorism. I would lay out concrete
timelines and again make it clear what they have to LOSE.
>>

This sounds rather like what was started with Oslo. The PA *was* given
autonomous control over most of the Gaza strip and the West Bank population
centers. This would have expanded had Arafat pursued a policy of "sustained
peace and restraint of terrorism".
