Funny you should ask:
> In this sense, ZMM is a search for an Ox and Lila is a return to the
market
> place?
because I had just finished rereading that section of the Guidebook to
ZaMM in an effort to resolve some issues with Bo.
My take would be close to yours in that ZaMM would represent the first
nine pictures with "Returning to the Source" analogous with the return
of Phaedrus at the end of Zen. Lila, I agree, is wholly about "Returning
to the Marketplace with Helping Hands" trying to help those ask for help
clarifying the philosophical elements of Zen.
When you say,
> Therefore you can only say Lila makes more sense if you accept its static
> sturcture. ZMM makes more sense if you wish to avoid structures.
my thinking is that both Zen Budhism and Pirsig's books suggest that one
cannot "avoid" the suffering of static patterns or structures, one must
live through and understand them prior to being able to transcend them.
Wilber's work suggests this is a common trait of all perennials
philosophies. Rarely does an individual make the journey from 1 to 10
without passing through 2,3,4,5,6,7,8, & 9 much as we all would like to
make such a jump.
Hi there!
Who are you by the way? :)
There is nothing in Classical Zen teaching regarding technology and this had
to be addressed at some point?
Pirsig does just this by suggesting that laws are ghosts selected from a
plethora of ghosts.
This being the case it will become evident to those who attend to the matter
that our age is full to the brim with so many ghosts it has become rather
difficult to disobey them!
Even our sense of identity is largely a ghost.
Now if one considers this for any length of time, it becomes astonishing to
realise just how illusory 21st century life has become for millions of people.
Transcendence for its own sake cannot be maintained, and Pirsig to his credit
states this a number of times in ZMM.
Ghost herding, to coin a phrase, is what its become about; our logic and
science has built invocative technology with which to summon the Gods of
rationality.
It's time to start caring about which ghosts we wish to invoke?
All the best,
Squonk.

PS: I reread an answer by Pirsig to an interview question where he
suggests we "back into the future" with the past arrayed in front of us
and it prompted a very early disussion where I had made this point about
DQ. If you redid the schematic this way it helps with that take:
Future
____^____relative direction of movement
DQ Present
v ----- direction of point of view
