MD Failure of the Enlightenment

Dearest Darling MOQists:

Just for the fun of it, I conducted a web search using the phrase, "failure
of the enlightenment". That search produced 136 hits. Not bad. Then I
entered "benefits of the enlightenment" and only got 20 hits. Similarly, by
substituting "success" for "benefits", I got 19 hits. "Advantages of the
enlightenment" rendered only a single match and "improvements" didn't get
anything. Zilch. Nada. But more interesting perhaps...

Most of the sites that popped up were either academic or religious
organizations, which seems to indicate that both intellectuals and
fundamentalists are interested in analyzing the effects of the enlightenment
period. These two different groups are engaged in a battle, the battle
between the 3rd and 4th levels. In more popular terms, they are engaged in
what Pat Buchanan and others have called a "culture war". In the search I
found some interesting quotes from people expressing social level values. I
thought it might be fun to post them. See if you can guess who said these
things. Answers are below.

1. "This is our government. They (the secular humanists) stole it. And we're
coming to take it back."

2. "This country belongs to God. He's the One who brought the USA into
existence. He had a special purpose for it. He raised it up, and
it's not going to be taken away from him."

3. "When the Christian majority takes over this country, there will be no
satanic churches, no more pornography, no more abortion, and no rights for
homosexuals. Pluralism and multiculturalism will be seen as immoral and evil
and the state will not permit anybody the right to practice evil."

4. "In winning a nation to the gospel, the sword as well as the pen must be
used."

5. "The national government will maintain and defend the foundations on
which the power of our nation rests. It will offer strong protection to
Christianity as the very basis of our collective morality."

6. "We want to fill our culture again with the Christian spirit. We want to
burn out all the recent immoral developments in literature, in the theater,
and in the press - in short, we want to burn out the poison of immorality
which has entered into our whole life and culture as a result of liberal
excess during the past few years."

WHO SAID IT?
1. Ollie North, Iran-contra figure and radio talk show host.
2. Kenneth Copeland, evangelical television preacher
3. Gary Potter, President of Catholics for Political Action
4. Rushdooney, I have no idea who this guy is
5. Adolf Hitler, the ultimate fascist murderer
6. Adolf Hitler, the supreme reactionary thug

See? Wasn't that fun?

Thanks for your time,
DMB
