Hi Glenn,
GLENN: This quote of Rorty's about one of the great
>Enlightenment thinkers is a gem of an example:
> "Galileo’s terminology was the only *secret* he had - he didn’t
> pick that terminology because it was 'clear' or 'natural,' or 'simple,'
> or in line with the categories of the pure understanding. He just lucked
> out".
>Erin, you might agree with Rorty, but don't tell me his position is not
>extreme.
ERIN: No I refuse to read anything Rorty because he doesn't like Pirsig--just
kidding. I don't really understand this quote though--we must be on
different wavelengths
ERIN: As for your other criticisms I probably agree with most.
I don't agree with dismissing postmodernism as a whole. It seems as ridiculous
as dismissing everthing written in the age of Enlightenment.
I guess I have a problem with generalizations--why can't we just take what we
can use and leave the rest. I have trouble believing everthing written by
every postmodern author has no value.
Scott had written "There is also a thesis-antithesis-synthesis aspect to all
this IMO".
I agree that most postmodernism literature i read seems like an antithesis and
doesn't go as far as the MOQ.
I don't dismiss it entirely because a process of antithesis is needed to get
to a synthesis.
Postmodernism helped deconstruct the myths of our time and this deconstructing
process is still a useful tool for me although I don't treat it as an
endpoint.
I need a framework to pull things together and MOQ is the best I have found.
But I do hold the possibility that MOQ will be deconstructed also.
My guess is that Pirsig created the MOQ by deconstructing the
cowboy and indian myths of our culture to synthesize them.
Sometimes you have to destory the old to create the new.
I think we are constantly constructing and deconstructing myths.
If deconstructing something touches a nerve then you are probably approaching
it a little too seriously.
Everything is game for criticism and deconstruction.
